Unit 1.1a Flashcards
What are the 4 steps you must take in cleaning small scale spillages?
- Wear gloves and lab coat
- Cover with paper towel, soaked in disinfectant, for 10mins and then a person of level 3 training can clean/clear it
- Debris picked up with tongs and placed in an auto cleavable bag or swept into a dustpan with paper towels
- Anything contaminated (paper towels etc.) must be auto cleaved
What is a hazard?
A source of potential harm
What are 5 examples of hazards?
- chemical
- physical
- biological
- radiation
- psychological
What is a chemical hazard?
Substance that’s natural or manmade that can cause harm or damage to the body, environment or property
What is a physical hazard?
Condition or situation that is natural or manmade that can cause bodily harm or intense stress
What is a biological hazard?
Biological agents that can cause bodily harm like viruses, parasites, bacteria etc.
What is a radiation hazard?
Those that harm or damage the human body by directly affecting cells
What is a physiological hazard?
Created by work related stress or in stressful situations/environments
What is the purpose of a risk assessment?
To detect areas of harm and how likely it would be for this to occur. It’s then taking measures to reduce the risk of this harm.
What is the purpose of a control measure?
To minimise risks caused by hazards
What are the 5 control measures in order of most proffered to least?
Elimination -most preferred
Substitution
Isolation
Education
Physical - least preferred
What is elimination? (control measure)
Replacing the hazardous substance/organism with a less harmful equivalent or remove it all together
What is substitution? (control measure)
Some hazards like chemicals or organisms are very dangerous so a less risky alternative could be used
What is isolation? (control measure)
Carrying out the procedure in a contained environment
What is education? (control measure)
Training people to follow standard methods of practice to reduce risk
