Unit 2.1e Flashcards
What is ethology?
It’s the study of animal behaviour
What is behaviour defined as?
An observable response that an organism makes to a stimulus, external or internal
What is an ethogram?
It’s a comprehensive list, inventory, or description of all the behaviours of an organism
What two things does an ethogram do?
Categorises behaviours, i.e. feeding, social etc.
It includes very specific definitions ie. what a chimp does when it yawns?
When describing behaviour, what is a state?
It is a behaviour that occurs for a long period of time
When describing behaviour, what is an event?
Behaviour that is short in duration and counted rather than timed
What are the three forms of quantitive data?
Latency
Frequency
Duration
What is latency?
The time between the stimulus occurring and the response behaviour
What is frequency?
The number of times of behaviour occurs within the observation period
What is duration?
The length of time each behaviour occurs during the observation period
What is needed to construct the time budget of animal behaviour?
An ethogram
What is anthropomorphism?
It is the attribution of human traits, emotions or intentions to non-human entities
(Giving animals, human qualities and traits)
