Unit 2.1c Flashcards
What does a biological key include?
Specialist identification information for species
What is the focus of a biological key?
The focus is features that species have that makes them identifiable
What is the focus of a classification guide?
The focus is one class of organisms from one geographic location
What do classification guides allow do and how?
They separate similar species, using descriptions of key features, habitat preferences and illustrations
What two things does the analysis of DNA and/or proteins allow?
It allows the identification of species that are visually very similar
It allows identification of species from just remains
What is classification?
It’s when organisms are grouped into categories which exhibit similar characteristics, morphological (structure) and physiological (ability to do something ie. Fly, roll tongue)
Why is classification beneficial?
Predictions can be made about organisms based on the understanding of related organisms
What is taxonomy?
It’s the science of defining groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics, and then naming these groups
What is a cladogram and what does it show?
It is a tree like diagram to illustrate phylogenetic relationships. This shows the points at which species are presumed to have diverged from common ancestors.
What is another name for a cladogram?
Phylogenetic tree
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukaryota
What type of cell is bacteria?
Prokaryotic
What type of cell is Archaea?
Prokaryotic
What type of cell is Eukaryota?
Eukaryotic
Which domain is an extremophile and what does this mean?
Archaea is an extremophile in this means that lives in harsh environments
