Unit 1.2b(iv) Flashcards
Are all proteins kept within the cell?
No, some are secreted out
What are some examples of secreted proteins?
Peptide hormones like insulin
Digestive enzymes like salivary amylase
Where are secreted proteins translated?
On the RER
Once translated where do the secreted proteins go?
The enter the ERs lumen
What do the secretory proteins travel through to get packaged into vesicles?
The Golgi apparatus
Once in the vesicle how is the protein secreted?
The vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane releasing the protein from the cell
Why do secreted proteins need to be activated if they’re required?
Because when they are synthesised they are made as inactive precursors
What activates secreted proteins?
Proteolytic cleavage
What is proteolytically cleavage an example of?
Post translational modification
What triggers proteolytic cleavage in the digestive enzyme pespin?
Stomach acid
