Unit 2 Concept 2 - CELL TRAVEL Flashcards
Passive Transport
requires no extra energy by the cells
because molecules move from high concentration (squished together) to low concentration (spread out) areas down the concentration gradient
Active Transport
Requires extra energy (ATP) to be spent to bring materials into the cell or expel materials out of the cell moving from low to high concentration against the concentration gradient.
Solute
what gets dissolved
Solvent
what does the dissolving
Solution
uniform mixture
Concentration
Amount of solute dissolved in solvent
Concentration Gradient
Difference in concentration of a substance from one location to another
Simple diffusion
the spreading out of molecules across a membrane until equilibrium is reached.
Equilibrium
equally concentrated on both sides of the membrane`
What transport transports 02 and C02,
simple
Facilitated diffusion
transport proteins,
helps to facilitate the diffusion of molecules that normally couldn’t pass through the cell membrane.
Osmosis
: the simple diffusion of water across the cell membrane.
What transports large molecules like calcium
facilitated
Hypotonic solutions
water concentration is higher than the cells cytoplasm
if a solution is hypotonic to a hypertonic cell then the cell will _____
if a solution is hypotonic to a hypertonic cell then the cell will swell
Hypertonic Solution
Hypertonic is when water concentration is lower than the cell cytoplasm
if a solution is hypertonic to a hypotonic cell, then the cell will ____.
if a solution is hypertonic to a hypotonic cell, then the cell will shrivel.
Isotonic
is identical water concentration to cells cytoplasm.
Molecular pump
uses energy to pump molecules across the membrane against the concentration gradient
through a protein pannel
what transports charged ions
molecular pumps
Endocytosis:
uses vesicles to move large particles into the cell
what are the 2 types of endocytosis
phagocytosis or pinocytosis
Phagocytosis
cell eating, cell engulfs solids into vesicles and and digests them
Pinocytosis
cell drinking, cell engulfs liquid into vesicles and and digests them
Exocytosis
uses vesicles go export materials out of the cell
Example of exocytosis
when nerve cells use neurotransmitters to send signals throughout the body
