Unit 1, Concept 1 Flashcards
Objective: Define Science.
i: Science = Observing the world and running experiments yo make fact based conclusions.
Objective: Give an example of a hypothesis in the correct format.
i: If I dance using brand X ballet shoes, then I will pirouette better.
Format- If _____ then ______.
Objective: Explain the relationship between independent and dependent variables within a hypothesis.
I: The Independent variable is what the experimenter deliberately changes or manipulates in the investigation (x axis). While the dependent variable is what changes in response to the independent variable (y axis).
Objective: Differentiate between an observation and an inference.
i: An observation is a description of something you can see, smell, touch, taste, hear. This is not an opinion, it must be objective. While an inference is a guess about an object or outcome based on observations. You can make many inferences from a single observation.
Objective: Explain the difference between accuracy and precision, and the significance of having data that is both.
i: Accuracy is how close your measurement is to the correct/accepted value, while precision is how close your measurements are to each other. Measurements that are both accurate and precise demonstrate validity.
Objective: List the general steps in designing and conducting an experiment.
i: Ask a question, conduct background research, construct a hypothesis, test your hypothesis in your experiment, draw conclusions and research them.
Objective: Give an example of a Scientific investigation design, with appropriate constants and variables (IV and DV).
Kadence wants to know if the type of pointe shoe she wears will get her more turns. She buys five different pointe shoes brands: Bloch (which is what she usually wears), Russian, Grishko, Suffolk, and Capizeo. Every one hour pointe class for 2 weeks she alternates her 4 brands of shoes (all equal days) and records how many turns she gets with that shoe. She makes sure she wears the same toe pads, ribbons, and tights everytime.
Fact
Fact: an objective, verifiable observation
Principle
Principle: a statement based on repeated observation
Law
Law: a broad concept or principle (HOW)
Theory
Theory: An explanation of an observed phenomenon
Qualitative
Qualitative: Describes qualities
Quantitative
Quantitative: Uses numbers to measure something
Independent Variable
Independent Variable: What the experimenter will deliberately change or manipulate in the investigation.
Dependent Variable
Dependent Variable: What changes in response to the independent variable.
