What are the 5 subtypes of schizophrenia?
A
- Disorganised schizophrenia
- Catatonic schizophrenia
- Paranoid schizophrenia
- Undifferentiated schizophrenia
- Residual schizophrenia

Disorganised schizophrenia
A
persons behaviour is generally disorganised and not goal directed
symptoms include:
* thought disturbances (including delusions and hallucinations)
* an absence of of expressed emotion
* incoherent speech
* large mood swings
* loss of interest in life- social withdrawl
* usually diagnosed in adolsescece/ young adulthood
* links to speech poverty

Catatonic schizophrenia
A
- disorganised if patient has severe motor abnormalities such as unusual gestures or use of body languauge
- sometimes patients gesture repeatedly using complex sequences of finger, hand and arm movements, which appear to have meaning for them
- this type often involves doing the opposite to what is being asked or repeating everything that is said
- main feature = almost total immobility for hours at a time with thw patient simply staring blankly

Paranoid schizophrenia
A
- involves delusions of many kinds
- patient remains emotionally responsive - part of brain that controls emotions is overly active
- they tend to be more alert than patients with other types of schizophrenia
- tend to be arguementative
- tend to not leave home
- most likely to commit crimes

Undifferentiated schizophrenia
A
- broad ‘catch-all’ category which includes patients who dont belong with any other category
- they show symptoms of schizophrenia but do not fit into the other types
- patient displays a variety of symptoms, no symptom is dominant (variety)

Residual schizophrenia
A
- people who although have had an episode of schizophrenia during the past 6 months and still exhibit some symptoms
- these are not strong enough to merti putting them in other categories
- patients who are experiencing mild symptoms
- doctor might put them on some medication
