Peer Reviewing Flashcards
Peer Reviewing
- The assessment of research work by psychologists/specialists working in a similar field
- Its in the form of quality of control
Stages of Peer Reviewing:
- Reviewers don’t know who has undertaken the research- to avoid personal bias
- A research paper submitted to a journal is sent to experts **(unpaid) **in field
- Experts critically appraise all aspects of the study as well as an ethics committee
- They then return the work with their recommendations as to whether the work is of acceptable quality
Evaluation :Strengths
+ It assess the validity of the research
+ Checks whether the design + method used were appropriate
+ Offers recommendations for further improvements + publcation
+ Ensures ethical considerations were maintained and BPS guidelines are met
+ Assess originality
+ Assess whether research is significant in a wider context
Evaluation: Weaknesses
-It relies on panel reviewing the research to be unbiased, if they are experts in field they may not like the findings which could cause valuable research to go unpublished
- The process is very long, some research may be outdated before its published
- Not enough people are recruited, as the job is unpaid
