What laws identify standards for humane care during transportation?
The animal welfare act and the lacey act
Who regulates the importation of all animals and animal products?
USDA, APHIS, veterinary services, import-export products staff
What are the responsibilities of someone receiving an imported animal or animal product?
To apply for a USDA permit and fill out additional forms for cell lines, monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins
Import of what species require animal permits?
Swine, ruminants, other hoof stock and poultry/birds
What are the quarantine durations for imported ruminants, poultry/swine and horses?
Ruminants: 30 days (not permitted from countries with BSE, FMD or rinderpest)
Poultry and swine: 30 days
Horses: 60 days when from countries affected with African horse sickness, 7 days when from countries affected with screwworm of VEE and 5 days when from all other countries
What is the purpose of the Lacey act?
To authorize the federal wildlife service to regulate transportation, importation, exportation, sale or purchase of any fish, wildlife or plants that may harm humans or US horticulture, forestry or wildlife resources
What is the definition of wildlife in the Lacey act?
Any wild animal whether alive or dead
What is the purview of the CDC over animal transport?
PHS, under the direction of the DHHS enforces regulations to prevent the introduction, transmission or spread of zoonotic diseases in the US
Permitting, registration and quarantine (does not regulate welfare or care)
Governs importation of any animal or product capable of carrying a zoonotic disease
What does the division of global migration and quarantine within the CDC do?
Issues permits for importation of animals for scientific, educational or exhibition purposes and prohibits importation of certain animals (African rodents in 2003 due to monkeypox, civets due to SARS in 2004 and Asian birds due to HPAI in 2004)
How often must NHPs undergo TST? What is an animal in a cohort has a positive or suspicious result?
At least 3 TSTs that are at least 2 weeks apart. If suspicious or positive result, cohort must remain in quarantine and receive at least 5 additional TSTs following removal of suspicious NHP
What does IATA stand for?
International air transport association
What do the IATA live animal regulations outline?
- Global standard for transporting animals by commercial airlines
- Addresses contained specifications, handling, labeling and necessary documentation
- Has a cooperation agreement with OIE to enhance veterinary research into animal health during air transport
According to the IATA regulations, what are the minimum dimensions of the “live animal” sticker that must be attached to the enclosure?
10 x 15 cm with 2.5 cm lettering

Must be placed on at least 2 opposite sides
