High potential for abuse which may lead to severe psychological or physical dependence
Ex. Morphine, hydromorphone, fentanyl, pentobarbital (nembutal)
DEA: What is the definition of a schedule III controlled substance?
Have a potential for abuse less than substances in schedules I or II and abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence of high psychological dependence
Ex. Buprenorphine, telazole, ketamine, pentobarbitol and phenytoin (Beuthanasia, euthasol)
DEA: What is the definition of a class IV controlled substance?
Low potential for abuse relative to substances in schedule III. Abuse may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs or other substances in schedule III
Ex. Diazepam, midazolam, butorphanol
DEA: What is the definition of a schedule V controlled substance?
Low potential for abuse relative to substances listed in schedule IV and consist primarily of preparations containing limited quantities of certain narcotics. Usually used for antitussive, antidiarrheal and analgesic purposes.
