transduction (genetic transfer) Flashcards
transduction
change/diversify dna by a carrier or vector via bacteriophage
bacteriophage
virus with its own dna that likes to infect other bacteria and help make more bacteriophages to pass on that genetic material
1st step in process of generalized transduction
bacteriophage latches on cell and passes its viral DNA (phage)
step 2 in generalized transduction
now have cell that contains viral dna to allow more to be made
2. proteins that enable to make more bacteriophages
3. release enzymes that break down and segment apart some of the bacterial dna
step 3 in generalized transduction
capses surround (viral) phage dna and bacterial dna
step 4 in generalized transduction
lysis occurs— popping of bacterial cell releasing that viral and bacterial dna
step 5 in generalized transduction
viral dna released from lysis inserts into bacteriophage which latches onto another cell
step 6 in generalized transduction
other bacterial dna latches on to another bacterial dna
step 7 in generalized transduction
now have a cell with a mixture of dna from other bacterial cell
significance of generalized transduction
giving cell viability for it to maybe have genes that can make proteins that will make it harmful and resistant in some way
what gene products does transduction make
erythrogeic toxin
botulinum toxin
colera toxin
difthrotoxin
shiga toxin
