ch. 14 koch's postulate Flashcards
koch’s postulate
used to demonstrate how a pathogen causes a disease
koch’s postulate rule 1
same pathogens must be PRESENT in every case of the disease
koch’s postulate rule 2
pathogen must be ISOLATED from the disease host and grown in pure culture
koch’s postulate rule 3
pathogen from pure culture must CAUSE the disease when its inoculated into a healthy laboratory animal
koch’s postulate rule 4
pathogen must be ISOLATED from inoculated animal and must be shown to be the original organism
limitation and current guide in rule 1(present)
asymptomatic individuals
current guides– epidemiological tools
limitation and current guide in rule 2 (isolation)
not all pathogens can be cultured –viruses
current guide– molecular techniques can be used to demonstrate the presence of pathogen
limitation in rule 3 (CAUSE)
some microorganisms may lose their pathogenicity after culture
limitation is last step of koch’s postulate (isolation)
not all infectious diseases have animal models
