Topic 9 - Surface epithelia: Simple and pseudostratified epithelia Flashcards
Simple squamos ep,
SINGLE LAYER OF CELLS
- Thinnest tissue-allows transport across membranes in lungs and capilliaries
- Secretes fluids in serous membranes(of body cavities and interal organs), covers organs
- Occurance: Pulmonary alveoli, parts of the kidney, in the middle eare, sereous membranes lining body cavitites and internal organs
Simple cuiboidal
Rounded nuclei, cell is more or less regular cube
Forms ducts, tubules, and secretory cells in exorine glands and kidney.
Simple cuboidal Occurance
lining of thyroid glands, surface og ovary, choroid plexus(brain, lens capsuel (eye), pigment epithelium of retuna (eye9, ducts of many glands, secretory acini of many glands and segments of kidney tubules
Simple columnar
Cell nuclei lie towards basal surface, cells are elongated.
Ciliatted(stomach) or non-ciliated (respiratory,intestinal tracts.
Func: absorbs digested nutruent, secretemucous, enzymes and other substances.
Simple columnar occurance
digestive tracts from the cardia of the stomach to the anus.larger excretory ducts of some glands, uterus and oviducts in human. Central canal of spinal chord.
Pseudostratified
SINGEL LAYER OF CELLS, WITH NUCLEI IN MORE THAN ONE LAYER.
Pseudostratified columnar
The nuclei are located at different levels in one layer.
Pseudostratified columnar occurance
the male urethrea, epidymis - male genital organ, trachea, primary brnchi, the auditory tube, parts of tympanic cavity and lacrimal sac
Pseudostratified transitional epithelium (urothelium)
Ranges from five cells thick to three cells thick
Pseudostratified transitional epithelium (urothelium)
occurance
lines in the urinary tracts where it provides strechability, important in allowing expansion
