Topic 44 - Veins Flashcards
What is the job of a vein?
To carry blood from capillary networ back to the heart
What can be said about diameter and thickness?
Increases towards heart
What can be said compared to arteries?
Larger lumen and thinner wall
What is different about their walls compared to arteries?
-In their wall there is less elastic elements, smooth muscle and increased connective tissue (collagen).
Veins function as?
Reservoir vessels
Classification of veins:
Venules: small veins
Large veins
Venous valves
Venules, small veins
Tunica intima: endothelium and lamina basalis
Tunica media: circular smooth muscle
Tunica adventitia: longitudinal collagen bundles
Large veins:
Tunica intima: endothelium and subendothelial CT
Tunica media: circular smooth muscle (may be missing)
Tunica adventitia: thickest layer. Elongated collagen fibres, elastic elements, smooth muscle, vasa vasorum.
Venous valves:
tunica intima duplications and form semilunar pocket-like structures, which prevents backflow.
