Topic 42 - Arteries Flashcards
What is elastic arteries?
aorta and primary branches, arteria pulmonalis. Contains large amount of elastic elements. Function as resistance vessels (for high blood pressure).
Elastic arteries:
Tunica intima:
-endothel+subendo-thelial connective tissue
Elastic arteris:
Tunica media:
30-70 layers of elastic membranes (fenestrated)+ SM (thickest layer)
Elastic arteries:
Tunica adventitia:
Tunica adventitia: elongated collagen fiber bundles, loose elastic fibers, vasa vasorum, nervi vasculares
What is muscular arteries?
medium to small caliber, with smooth muscle as dominating element in tunica media. Function as distributor vessels. Possess internal and external elastic membranes (between each of the tunica).
Muscular arteries:
Tunica intima
similar to the one of elastic arteries
Muscular arteries:
Tunica media
the thickest layer spiral smooth muscle cell layers +few elastic fibers
Muscular arteries:
Tunica adventitia:
thinner than media. Longitudinally running collagen fibers, CT cells.
What is a diseased arterie?
narrowed atrial wall due to poor diet (cholesterol), decreased diameter slows blood flow allowing clotting to occur, hypoxia occurs with complete blockage
What is arterioles?
: 2-3 layers thick, lead into capillaries, controlled by sphincter.
