Topic 7 Adaptions Flashcards
What is an adaptation
A characteristic of an organism increasing its chances of surviving and or reproducing
What are the three types of adaptation
Structural
behavioural
functional
What are structural adaptations
Features of an organisms body structure such as shape or colour
How have an Arctic Foxes structurally adapted
Have white fur so they camouflaged against the snow
And help them avoid predators and sneak up on prey
How have Wales adapted to living in cold places
Have a thick layer of blubber a low surface area to volume ratio to help them retain heat
How have camels adapted to living in hot places
Have thin layer of fat in a large surface area to volume ratio to help them lose heat
What are behavioural adaptations
There’s always the organisms behaved many species migrate to warmer climates during the winter to avoid problems of living in cold conditions
What are functional adaptations
These are things that go on inside an organisms body that could be related to process is like reproduction of metabolism
How have desert animals functionally adapted
Desert animals conserve water by producing very little sweat in small amounts of concentrated urine
How have brown bear functionally adapted
Brown bears hibernate over winter they lower their metabolism is which conserve energy so they don’t have to hunt when there’s not much food about
Why do micro organisms have a huge variety of adaptions
So they can live in a wide range of environments
What are micro organism is known as
Extremophiles
What are extremophiles
They’re adapted to live in very extreme conditions for example at high temperatures (in volcanoes) high salt concentration (in salty lakes) or high pressure (deep sea vent)
