Topic 5 Comtrolling Blood Glucose Flashcards
What is glucose controlled as a part of
Homeostasis
What are 2 hormones involved in controlling blood glucose
Insulin.
Glucagon
Eating food containing carbohydrates puts what into the blood
Glucose from the gut into the blood
What removes glucose cells from the blood
Normal metabolism of cells
What removes lots of glucose from the blood
Vigorous exercise
What is excess glucose stored as
Glycogen in the liver and in the muscles
What are the levels of glucose in the blood monitored and controlled by
The pancreas using hormones insulin and glucagon
What happens if there is too much glucose in the blood
Insulin is secreted by the pancreas
Insulin and glucose from blood move into the liver where it is turned from glucose to glycogen
What happens if glucose level is too low
Glucagon is secreted by the pancreas
Glucagon makes liver turn glycogen back into glucose
Glucose is released into the blood by the liver
What is type 1 diabetes
Where the pancreas produces little or no insulin so blood surge can rise to a level that will kill them
What do people with type 1 diabetes need
Insulin therapy
What is insulin therapy
Several injections of insulin throughout the day most likely at meal times to make sure that glucose is removed from the blood quickly once the food has been digested stopping the level getting too high
What does the amount of insulin injected depend on
The persons diet and how active they are
What else might people with type 1 diabetes need to think about
Limiting food intake of food rich in simple carbohydrates ( which causes blood glucose to rise quickly) and taking regular exercise ( helps to remove excess glucose from the blood)
What is type 2 diabetes
When a person becomes resistant to their own insulin
(They still produce insulin but their body cells don’t respond properly to the hormone)
