Topic 6 Classification Flashcards
Who created the Linnaean system
Carl Linnaeus
What are the kingdoms subdivided into small groups
Phylum
class
order
family
genius
species
Who propose the three domain system
Carl woese
What are the three domains
Archaea
bacteria
eukaryotic
What is in the Archaea domain
Organisms in the domain will once thought to be primitive bacteria but Are actually a different type of prokaryotic cell
first found in extreme places such as hot springs and salt lakes
What is in the bacteria domain
This domain contains true bacteria like E . Coli and staphylococcus
Although they look similar to Archaea there are lots of biochemical differences
What is found in the eukaryotic domain
This domain includes a broad range of organisms including fungi, plants, animals and protists
What gives you the Latin name of a species
The binomial system
Genius and species
Why are the names useful
The binomial system is a worldwide system and means that scientist in different countries or who speak different languages all refer to a particular species in the same name avoiding potential confusion
What does evolutionary tree show
How do scientist think different species are related to each other
What does a more recent common ancestor mean
They are more closely related to the species
