3
Q

What does the body temperature have to balance

A

The amount of energy gained (through respiration)
And the energy lost to keep the core body temperature constant

Q

Where is the thermoregulatory centre

A

In the brain which contains receptors that are sensitive to temperature of the blood flowing through the brain

6
Q

What does it mean that some effectors work antagonistically

A

One effector heats and other cools at the same time to produce precise temperatures and allows for more sensitive responses

Q

What happens when you are too hot

A

Sweat is produced by sweat glands and evaporates from the skin which transfers energy into the environment
Blood vessels supplying blood dilate so more blood flows closer to the surface of the skin
This is called vasodilation and helps transfer energy from the skin to the environment

Q

What happens when you are cold

A

Hairs stand up to trap am insulating layer of air
No sweat is produced
Blood vessels supplying the skin capillaries construct to close of the skins blood supply
Vasoconstriction
Shiver muscles contract automatically - needs respiration which transfers some energy to warm the body
