Topic 5 Commercial Uses Of Plant Hormones Flashcards
What can auxins be used for
Killing weeds
growing from cuttings with rooting powder
growing cells in tissue culture
What is the difference between most weeds and crops
Weeds are broadleaved wild grasses and cereals have narrow leaves
How is auxins been developed to kill weeds
Selective weed killers have been developed using auxins which only affect broad leaf plants
they destruct their normal growth patterns which soon kills them was leaving the grass and crops untouched
What is a cutting
Part of a plant has been cut off but the end of a brand with a few leaves on it
What should you add to get cuttings to grow
Rooting powder which contains auxins
they will produce roots rapidly and start growing as new plants and enables growers to produce lots of clones of a really good plant quickly
What can tissue cultures be used for
Grow clones of a plant from a few cells
using hormones such as auxins that need to be added to the growth medium along with nutrients to stimulate the cells to divide to form both roots and shoots
What is Gibberellin
A type of plant growth hormone that stimulates seed germination, stem growth and flowering
What can gibberellin be used for
Controlling dormancy
inducing flowering
growing larger fruit
What happens to seeds treated with Gibberellin
Alters the dormancy and makes of germinate at times of the year they wouldn’t normally
and make sure all the seeds in a batch Germinate at the same time
How is gibberellin used for inducing flowers
If treated flour without any change in the environment and can be used to grow bigger flowers
How is gibberellin used to grow larger fruit
Added to seedless varieties of fruit to make them grow larger to match normal types
What does gibberellins stimulate
Plants Stems to grow
What does Ethene stimulate
Ripening of fruit
What is Ethene produce from
A gas produced by ageing parts of a plant
What does Ethene influence
The growth of a plant by controlling cell division
also stimulate enzymes that cause a fruit ripen
