What are hormones
Are chemical messengers released by glands difficult into the blood
What do hormones target
Particular cells in particular organs called target organs
What are hormones secreted by
Various glans called endocrine glands
What do the endocrine glands make up
The endocrine system
What do hormones tend to have
A relatively long lasting effect
Where is the pituitary gland
At the top behind the nose
What is produced at the pituitary gland
Produces many hormones that regulate body conditions and it’s called the master gland
Produces FSH and LH
Thyroxine stimulating hormone ( TSH)
What is produced in the thyroid gland
In the neck produces thyroxine which is involved in regulating things like rate of metabolism, heart rate and temperature
Where and what is the adrenal gland used for
Above the kidneys produces adrenaline which is to prepare the body for fight or flight
What does the ovaries produce
Oestrogen and progesterone involved in the menstrual cycle
What are the testes produce
Produce testosterone which controls puberty and sperm production
What does the pancreas produce
Insulin which is used to regulate glucose level of blood
Difference between hormones and nerves
Nerves very fast acting
hormones slow action
nerves act for a very short time
hormones act for a long time
nerves act on a very precise area
hormones act in a more general way
