Topic 5 The Nervous System Flashcards
What is a stimulus
Change in the environment
What does the nervous system do
Detects and reacts to stimuli
What does the nervous system mean
Humans can react to their surroundings and coordinate their behaviour
What is the nervous system made up of
Central nervous system (CNS)
Sensory neurones
Motor neurones
Effectors
What is the central nervous system (CNS)
In vertebrates this consists of the brain and spinal cord only
In mammals, the CNS is connected to the body by sensory neurones and motor neurones
What do sensory neurones carry
The neurones that carry information as electrical meiosis from the receptors to the CNS
What do motor neurones carry
Neurones that carry electrical impulses from the CNS to effectors
What are relay neurones
Carry nerve impulses within the central nervous system
What are the effectors
All of your muscles and glands which respond to nervous impulses
What are the receptors
The cells that detect the stimuli
What do effectors respond to
Nervous impulses and bring about a change
How do muscles react to nervous impulses
The muscles contract
How do glands respond to nervous Impulses
Glands secrete hormones
Why is the central nervous system a coordination centre
Receives information from the receptors and coordinates a response carried out by the effectors
