Topic 6 Meiosis Flashcards
What does meiosis produce
Gametes
Where does meiosis happen in humans
Only in the reproductive organs (the ovaries and the testes)
What happens in meiosis before the cells start to divide
Duplicates genetic information Forming two arms chromosomes one arm of each chromosome is an exact copy of the other arm
What happens in the first division of meiosis
The chromosomes pairs lineup
What happens after the pairs are lined up
They are pulled apart so each new cell only has one copy of each chromosome some of the fathers chromosomes are some of the mothers chromosomes go into each new cell
What happens on the second division of meiosis
The chromosomes line up again in the centre of the cell the arms of the chromosomes are pulled apart
What is produced at the end of meiosis
Four gametes each with only one single set of chromosomes in it
each gamete is genetically different from the others because chromosomes get shuffled during meiosis
each gamete only gets half of them
What happens after two gametes fuse during fertilisation
The new cell divides by mitosis to make a copy of itself
Mitosis repeat many times to produce lots of new cells in an embryo what happens next
These cells start to differentiate into different types of specialised cells that make up the whole organism
