Topic 5 Adrenaline And Thyroxine Flashcards
What is adrenaline
Hormone released by the adrenal glands which are just above the kidneys
When is adrenaline released
In response to stressful or scary situations
your brain detects fear or stress and sends nervous impulses to the adrenal glands which respond by secreting adrenaline which prepares you for fight or flight
How does adrenaline prepare you for fight or flight
Triggering mechanisms that increase the supply of oxygen and glucose to cells in the brain and muscles
for example adrenaline increases heart rate
What can hormones be affected by
Negative feedback
when the body detects the level of a substance has gone above or below the normal level it triggers a response
What does thyroxine regulate
Metabolism
What is thyroxine released by
The thyroid gland in the side of the neck
Why is thyroxine important
Plays an important role in regulating the basil metabolic rate (The speed at which chemical reactions in the body occur while the body is at rest)
Thyroxine is important for stimulating protein synthesis for growth and development
What is thyroxine released in response to
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) which is released from the pituitary gland
What happens if your mouth of thyroxine in the blood is higher than normal
The secretion of TSH from the Pituitary gland is inhibited
What happens if the level of thyroxine the blood is too low
TSH is released again from the pituitary gland
