Define skill.
A
- A specific and defined task that can be learned and practised.

What are the characteristics of a skill? (LACE FACE)
A
L - learned
A - aestheticaly pleasing
C - consistent
E - efficient
F - fluent
A - accurate
C - controlled
E - economical

Why do we classify skills?
A
- Coaches and teachers need to be able to create sessions which are relevant to the learner/player.
- For this reason we group different skills together that share similar characteristics.
- This is important when teaching new/novel skills

What is a continuum?
A
- A line with a classification extreme at the end

What is the environmental influence continuum? (EIC)
A
- The EIC considers the factors that surround a performer as they execute their skill.
- Closed skills - not affected by the environment because they’re predictable - the timing of the skill is down to the individual, there are very few variables that are outside their control
- Open skills - are affected by the undpredictable and changing environment - the completion of the skills is influenced by conditions of play, teammates and opponents

What are closed skills?
A
- A skill performed in a predictable environment
- E.g. javelin

What are open skills?
A
- A skill performed in an unpreditable environment, where the performer has to react and adjust to the changing nature of the situation.
- E.g. rugby tackle

What are gross skills?
A
- Skills that uses large muscle groups
- Examples: rugby tackle, shot in football

What are fine skills?
A
- Skills that uses smaller muscle groups
- Examples: archery, darts

What are self paced skills?
A
- Performer controls the start and the speed of the skill.
- Example: javelin, high jump.

What are externally paced skills?
A
- Performer has no conitrol over over start and speed of skill.
- Examples: receiving a serve.

What is a discrete skill?
A
- One that has a clear beginning and end.
- Example: tennis serve

What is a continuous skill?
A
- A discrete skill you can repeat over and over again. It has no onbvious beginning and end.
- Example: jogging.

What is a serial skill?
A
- One that contains several discrete skills in order to make an integrated movement.
- E.g. triple jump

What are low organisation skills?
A
- Skills that are easily broken into parts.
- Examples: front crawl swimming
