What is visual guidance?

A
  • When a performer can see the skill being performed or practised.
  • For example: demonstration - sometimes by the coach or another performer, usually highlighting certain aspects that are important

What are the advantages and disadvantages of visual guidance?

A

Adv:
- helps learner create mental image
- practical demonstrations prove extremely effective - manly at cognitive stage
- posters/diagrams - useful for highlighting technical stages

Disadv:
- complex skills have too much info in them for a demonstration to be made
- may not provide a lot of info about movement patterns, lose learners attention
- digrams lose their impact and have very limited use.

What is verbal guidance?

A
  • An explaination given by an observer after watching your performance and usucally in combination with visual guidance.
  • It helps build the correct mental image in the memory.
  • For example, coaching points, coach/peer feedback

What are the advantages and disadvantages of verbal guidance?

A

Adv:
- tactics can be explained
- gives technical info/key points and highlights cues
- feedback can be given immediately.
- when used with vidual can form a mental image

Disadv:
- overload beginners with info
- learner may lose concentration
- language too complex for beghinners

What is manual guidance?

A
  • When a perfromer is physically guided or supported by the coach.
  • For example, this is provided when a coach guides an athletes arm to mimic a jaelin throw or when a coach supports a gymnast to do a backflip.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of manual guidance?

A

Adv:
- eliminates danger
- builds confidence in the perfformer
- fear or anxiety with dangerous skills may be reduced with hands on support.

Disadv:
- detrimental effect on performer if overused
- too much reliance can interfere with task

What is mechanical guidance?

A
  • When the performer is guided by equipment to support the learner whilst practiding the skill
  • Use of equipment offers safety and allows learner to gain confidence.

What are the advantages and disadvantags of mechanical guidance?

A

Adv:
- builds confidence
- eliminates danger
- gives early feel for whole skill
- can be used with disabled athletes
- helps break down complex skills into parts

Disadv:
- dependent on support
- intereferes with kinaesthetic awareness
- proximity of coahc may be upsetting
- incorrect feel/intrinsic feedback results in bad habits
- demotivation
