Lesson 2: Transfer of Learning Flashcards
1
Q
Define transfer of learning.
A
- The effect of the learning of one skill on the learning and performance of another
2
Q
What are the 4 types of transfer?
A
- Positive
- Negative
- Zero
- Bilateral
3
Q
What is positive transfer?
A
- When the learning of one skill helps the learning of another
- E.g. running into a tackle and defending in rugby and can be used in american football - enhances learning.
4
Q
What is negative transfer?
A
- When the learning of one skill hinders the learning of another
- E.g. although similar actions kicking up for conversions in rugby may hinder technique for kicking lower for penalties in football.
5
Q
What is zero transfer?
A
- When the learning of one skill has no impact on the learning of another.
- E.g. sailing skills with have no effect on your basketball skills.
6
Q
What is bilateral transfer?
A
- When learning of one skill is passed across the body from limb to limb.
- E.g. learning the left hook can be transfered to the right limb.
7
Q
How can positive tranfer be ensured?
A
- Positive transfer can be encouraged by making sure training is realistic.
- For example, the use of cones and tackle bags are replaced by real people in small sided games - a more relevant representation of the game.
8
Q
How can a coach ensure negative transfers dont happen?
A
- The coach must make sure that one skill is well learned before moving on to a more advanced skill.
- If skills are not learned well and technique is wrong then negative transfers can take place as bad habits are learned.
- E.g. swimming progressions not learned properly before moving on to lengths.
9
Q
How do you maximise or optimise positive transfer of skills?
A
1 - Highlight the similarites
2 - Make sure the skill is well learned and is autonomous.
3 - Plan progressions and make sure that practice situations are realistic
4 - Increase confidence and motivation in players
