  • Massed practice involves repeating the skill or action on numerous occasions with few or no rest periods.
  • Used when skill is discrete, simple, closed, highy organised, self paced

Adv:
- Forms motor programmes
- Increases fitness
- Enhances over learning
- Good for habitual responses
- Efficient

Disadv:
- No time for feedback
- Fatigue
- Too demanding

  • Distributed practice involves rest intervals between sessions; used when skill is continuous when the performer may need a break.
  • Used when skill is continuous, complex, low organised, serial, externally paced.

  • Varied practice involves changing the practice conditions to incorporate as many different situations as possible, in a range of different contexts which replicate the various situations found in competition.
  • Used when skill is complex, open, externally paced

A
  • Mental practice is the cognitive rehearsal of a physical skill without movement. You visualize or imagine yourself going through the actions, but don’t actually do them
  • Used when skill is serial/complex, used by both novice and expert, internal: emotional, external: mental picutre of environment.
