A
  • Participation in sport for the love of it, receiving no financial gain, it is based on the concept of athleticism

History of amateurism

A
  • 19th century code: ideal of sporting ethics which developed among upper/middle class during the victorian era - amaterus held a higher status in sports than pro’s
  • Code of ethics: involved playing sports to a high set of moral values which included fair play, sportsmanship, immediatw acceptance of rules and refereeing decisions
  • Wealthy: free time for sport for UC/MC could afford to play sport for the love of it rather than for monetary gain
  • Participation is more important than winning: viewed as a character building excercise - UC/MC played sport accordingly to their God given talents and training was fround upon
  • Elite performers of 19th century: amateurs were considered the elite performers of the 19th century and were regarded highly in society for thei rsporting talents
  • Evidence of amateurism today: fair play/sportsmanship - still viewed positively

What are the 4 virtues of sportsmanship?

A
  • Respect: players, coaches and fans must respect their team, opposing team and officials at all times
  • Fairness: all players and coaches must follow established rules
  • Responibility - players and coaches must take responsibility for their performance as well as their actions on the field
  • Integrity: players will be penalised for gamesmanship; fines will be put in place with potential bans

What are the key tenants of gamesmanship?

A
  • Winning is everthing
  • Its only cheating if you get caught
  • Ref’s job to catch wrongdoing and the athletes and coaches have no inherent responsibility to follow the rules
  • The ends always justify the means
