Factors that influence response time Flashcards
1
Q
Hick’s Law
A
- Hicks law states that the more choices we have, the slower the reaction time
- As you become more familiar w/ opponents and their skills you start to learn them and their environment becomes more familiar, you get slightly quicker w/ reactions
- Curve on graph gets less steep and curves over
2
Q
Single channel hypothesis
A
- states that only one stimulus can be processed at a time.
- the second one has to wait to be processed.
- this delay increases response time and helps explain Hicks Law
3
Q
Psychological refractory period
A
- a delay when a second stimulus is presented before the first has been processed
- it refers to the delay in response to the second of closely spaced out stimui - linked to reaction time and stimulus response bond
4
Q
Example of PRP: tennis
A
- S1: player 1 plays a forehand drive towards player 2’s forehand
- R1: player 2 preps to return w/ forehand drive
- S2: ball hits net and changes direction
- R2: player 2 must change shot selection from forehand to backhand
- PROBLEM: performer is locked in to response to S1. This must be processed before they can react to S2
5
Q
More on PRP
A
- the brain can only deal w/ one piece of info at a time/respond to one stimulus at a time
- the second stimulus arrives in close succession
- one signal must be cleared before anoter can be responded to due to single channel hypothesis
6
Q
What is anticipation?
A
- attempting to predict that a movement will happen
7
Q
What is spatial anticipation?
A
- performer predicts what is going to happen
- e.g. badminton, the perfomer detects a slight change in the shot action and expects a drop shot
8
Q
What is temporal anticipation?
A
- performer predicts when the action will happen
- e.g. football, defender tried to guess when attacker will pass the ball
