TOPIC 28A General features of muscles, muscular auxiliary structures Flashcards
Functions of muscles
move the body
support viscera (resp system, abd pressure)
protection
different types of muscle
smooth
striated (cardiac and skeletal)
muscles can either work
antagonistically (against eachother) or synergistically (together)
fastest skeletal muscle
wings of insects (300contr/sec)
where is smooth muscle found & types
in organs
fast twitch = white
slow twitch = red
characteristics of skeletal muscle
connected to bone and cartilage
well vascularised and innervated
form thoracic and abdominal walls
helps support body weight
different parts of a muscle (5)
- origin - punctum fixum, proximal, less mobile part
- insertion - punctum mobile, distal
- belly - fleshy, contracts
- tendons - white cords of collagen bundles in parallel arrangements. cont. of soft tissue of muscles
- musculotendinous junction - junction bw muscle fibres and tendon fibres
spindle shaped muscle variations
- unipennate
- bipennate
- multipennate
what is unipennate muscle and give example
2 parallel tendons on either side - eg. DDF ulnar and radial heads
what is bipennate muscle and give example
2 tendon SHEATHS of different directions
eg. m infraspinati
what is multipennate muscle and give example
several tendon sheaths of different directions
eg. DDF humeral head
Connective tissue elements of a muscle (4)
- perimysium
- epimysium
- endomysium
- fascia
what is perimysium
covers muscle fascicles and contains nerves and vessels
what is the epimysium
fibrous CT that surrounds separate muscle fibre bundles - the separate parts of one muscle
what is the endomysium
small CT that surrounds muscle fibres arranged in coils. has vessels and nerves
