Theraputic Nutrition- EPI Flashcards
when do we see EPI
after panreatits, young adults usu, higher incidence in german shepards
signs of EPI
weight loss, polyphagia, pica, diarrhea (large volume, semi formed), pale feces (tan-grey) w foul odor, flatulence secondary bacterial overgrowth
bc of malabsorption/ digestion
how to diagnose EPI
fecal trypsin test (gelatin or xray, should be present), TLI (trypsin-like immunoreactivity) blood test
ways to treat and manage EPI
suppliment pancreatic enzymes, (pancreazyme, viokase), feed high digestibility food (low fiber, low fat, good protein), suppliment vitamins (esp fat soluble ones), antibiotics for bacterial growth (metronidazole)
possible causes of hepatitis
neoplasia, infection, toxin
signs of hepatitis
lethargy, anorexia, jaundice, ascites (build up of fluid in abdomen from blood back up in portal vein, fluid leaks), weight loss, v/d, CNS after eating (ammonia and other things not being detoxified by liver)
abnormalities we would see on bloodwork of an animal w hepatitis
elevated liver enzymes, decreased bile acids, increased BSP clearance time, elevated billiruben (uncongigated), increased clotting time (liver makes clotting factors), decreased protein (liver synthesizes protein)
ways to treat hepatitis
treat any underlying disease (antibiotics), vitamins, milk thistle (contains silymarin, an antioxidant), easier to digest food (ex: EN)
what is feline hepatic lipidosis
fatty accumulation in liver
possible causes of feline hepatic lipidosis
cats that have lost weight rapidly: starvation, med condition that causes inappetance, stress in environment, diet too quickly
signs of feline hepatic lipidosis
weight loss->jaundice, elevated liver enzymes
how to treat feline hepatic lipidosis
force feed highly digestible food, nasogastric or gastrostomy tube, appetite stimulants (recovery up to 3 months)
food to feed to prevent cancer (suposedly)
antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E, beta carotene, selenium, zinc) synthetic antioxidants (ethoxyquin, binds to carcinogenic chemicals), soy protein
how soy protein prevents cancer
inhibits tumor growth, contains isoflavins (protease inhibitors), decreases chance of breast and colon cancer
why cancer patients need to be fed a high calorie diet
high BMR (need 2 x normal energy), cachexia, decreased appetite
