سورة المعارج : The way of ascent

Question 1

سَأَلَ سَائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ ‎﴿١﴾

Answer 1

A demanding person has asked for the punishment that is going to befall.

Question 2

لِّلْكَافِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ ‎﴿٢﴾

Answer 2

The disbelievers, there is none to avert it.

Question 3

مِّنَ اللَّهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِ ‎﴿٣﴾

Answer 3

(And it will come) from Allah (s.w.t) The Lord of the stairways.

Question 4

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ ‎﴿٤﴾

Answer 4

To whom ascend the angels and the spirit (Jibrael (a.s) in A Day the length of which is 50,000 years.

Question 5

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا ‎﴿٥﴾

Answer 5

So observe patience, a good patience.

Question 6

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَعِيدًا ‎﴿٦﴾‏

Answer 6

They see it far off.

Question 7

وَنَرَاهُ قَرِيبًا ‎﴿٧﴾

Answer 7

And we see it near.

Question 8

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَاءُ كَالْمُهْلِ ‎﴿٨﴾

Answer 8

(The punishment will befall) on The Day when the sky will be like dregs of oil.

Question 9

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِ ‎﴿٩﴾‏

Answer 9

And the mountains will be like dyed wool.

Question 10

وَلَا يَسْأَلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا ‎﴿١٠﴾‏

Answer 10

And no friend will ask about any friend.

Question 11

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ ‎﴿١١﴾

Answer 11

(Though) they will be made to see eachother, a guilty person will desire that he may be able to ransom himself from the torment of That Day, even by his sons.

Question 12

وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَأَخِيهِ ‎﴿١٢﴾

Answer 12

And his wife and his brother.

Question 13

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ الَّتِي تُؤْوِيهِ ‎﴿١٣﴾

Answer 13

And his kindred that sheltered him.

Question 14

وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ ‎﴿١٤﴾

Answer 14

And all those on earth that he may redeem himself.

Question 15

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ ‎﴿١٥﴾

Answer 15

By no means it is the flaming fire.

Question 16

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ ‎﴿١٦﴾‏

Answer 16

That will pull out the skin of the scalp.

Question 17

تَدْعُو مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ ‎﴿١٧﴾

Answer 17

It will call him who had turned his back and fled away (from the truth).

Question 18

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ ‎﴿١٨﴾‏

Answer 18

And accumulated (wealth) and hoarded it.

Question 19

۞ إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا ‎﴿١٩﴾

Answer 19

Indeed man is created weak in courage.

Question 20

إِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا ‎﴿٢٠﴾‏

Answer 20

Very upset when touched by evil.

Question 21

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا ‎﴿٢١﴾

Answer 21

And very niggard when visited by good fortune.

Question 22

إِلَّا الْمُصَلِّينَ ‎﴿٢٢﴾

Answer 22

Except the performers of salah.

Question 23

الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ ‎﴿٢٣﴾‏

Answer 23

Who are regular in their salah.

Question 24

وَالَّذِينَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ ‎﴿٢٤﴾‏

Answer 24

And those whose riches there is a specified right.

Question 25

لِّلسَّائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِ ‎﴿٢٥﴾

Answer 25

For the one who asks and the one who is deprived.

Question 26

وَالَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ ‎﴿٢٦﴾‏

Answer 26

And those who believe in The Day of Judgement as true.

Question 27

وَالَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ ‎﴿٢٧﴾‏

Answer 27

And those who are fearful of the torment of their Lord.

Question 28

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ ‎﴿٢٨﴾

Answer 28

Indeed the torment of their Lord is not something to be fearless from.

Question 29

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ ‎﴿٢٩﴾

Answer 29

And those who guard their private parts.

Question 30

إِلَّا عَلَىٰ أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ ‎﴿٣٠﴾‏

Answer 30

Except from their wives and those (slave girls) owned by their hands because they are not to be blamed.

Question 31

فَمَنِ ابْتَغَىٰ وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ ‎﴿٣١﴾‏

Answer 31

But the one who seeks (sexual gratification) beyond that, then such people are the transgressors.

Question 32

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَ ‎﴿٣٢﴾

Answer 32

And those who are careful about their trusts and covenants.

Question 33

وَالَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَائِمُونَ ‎﴿٣٣﴾‏

Answer 33

And those who are upright in their testimonies.

Question 34

وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ ‎﴿٣٤﴾

Answer 34

And those who take due care of their salah.

Question 35

أُولَٰئِكَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ ‎﴿٣٥﴾

Answer 35

Those who will be honoured in gardens of jannah.

Question 36

فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ ‎﴿٣٦﴾

Answer 36

So what's happened to those who disbelieve that they are rushing towards you? (to object)

Question 37

عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ ‎﴿٣٧﴾‏

Answer 37

From the right and from the left in groups.

Question 38

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ ‎﴿٣٨﴾

Answer 38

Does everyone of them aspire to be admitted to the gardens of bliss?

Question 39

كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ ‎﴿٣٩﴾‏

Answer 39

By no means We have created them from what they know.

Question 40

فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ إِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَ ‎﴿٤٠﴾

Answer 40

So I swear by The Lord of the points of sunrise and those of sunset, We are powerful.

Question 41

عَلَىٰ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ ‎﴿٤١﴾

Answer 41

To bring those better than them in their place and We are not to be frustrated.

Question 42

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ ‎﴿٤٢﴾‏

Answer 42

So leave them involved in pass-time and play, until they encounter their Day which they are promised.

Question 43

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ ‎﴿٤٣﴾

Answer 43

The Day they will come out of the graves quickly as if they were pushing towards idols.

Question 44

خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ ‎﴿٤٤﴾‏

Answer 44

With their eyes downcast enveloped by humiliation. That is The Day which they are being promised.
