سورة القلم : The Pen

Question 1

ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ ‎﴿١﴾‏

Answer 1

Nun, By the pen and what they write.

Question 2

مَا أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ ‎﴿٢﴾‏

Answer 2

With the grace of your Lord you are not insane.

Question 3

وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ ‎﴿٣﴾

Answer 3

And you will definitely have a reward that will never end.

Question 4

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ ‎﴿٤﴾‏

Answer 4

And you are surely on an excellent standard of character.

Question 5

فَسَتُبْصِرُ وَيُبْصِرُونَ ‎﴿٥﴾

Answer 5

So, you will see, and they will see

Question 6

بِأَييِّكُمُ الْمَفْتُونُ ‎﴿٦﴾‏

Answer 6

which of you is demented.

Question 7

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ ‎﴿٧﴾‏

Answer 7

Surely your Lord knows best who has strayed from his way, and He is well aware of those who are on the right path.

Question 8

فَلَا تُطِعِ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ ‎﴿٨﴾‏

Answer 8

So, do not obey those who reject (the true faith).

Question 9

وَدُّوا لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ ‎﴿٩﴾‏

Answer 9

They wish that you become flexible (in your faith), so that they should become flexible (in their hostile attitude).

Question 10

وَلَا تُطِعْ كُلَّ حَلَّافٍ مَّهِينٍ ‎﴿١٠﴾‏

Answer 10

And do not obey any worthless one who swears much,

Question 11

هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّاءٍ بِنَمِيمٍ ‎﴿١١﴾

Answer 11

a slanderer who goes about stirring,

Question 12

مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ ‎﴿١٢﴾

Answer 12

one who prevents good, (and who is) a transgressor, sinful,

Question 13

عُتُلٍّ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ ‎﴿١٣﴾

Answer 13

harsh, (and) after all that, doubtful in his birth,

Question 14

أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ ‎﴿١٤﴾

Answer 14

(do not obey such a person merely) because he is a man of wealth and sons.

Question 15

إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتُنَا قَالَ أَسَاطِيرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ‎﴿١٥﴾‏

Answer 15

When Our verses are recited to him, he says: “(These are) the tales of the ancient.”

Question 16

سَنَسِمُهُ عَلَى الْخُرْطُومِ ‎﴿١٦﴾

Answer 16

We will soon brand him on the snout.

Question 17

إِنَّا بَلَوْنَاهُمْ كَمَا بَلَوْنَا أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ إِذْ أَقْسَمُوا لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا مُصْبِحِينَ ‎﴿١٧﴾‏

Answer 17

We have tested them as We had tested the owners of the garden, when they had sworn an oath that they would pluck its fruits on the next morning,

Question 18

وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ ‎﴿١٨﴾‏

Answer 18

and did not make any exception (by saying in shaa’ Allaah).

Question 19

فَطَافَ عَلَيْهَا طَائِفٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمْ نَائِمُونَ ‎﴿١٩﴾

Answer 19

Then, they whirled around it a whirl (of calamity) from your Lord, while they were asleep.

Question 20

فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَالصَّرِيمِ ‎﴿٢٠﴾‏

Answer 20

Thus on the next morning it was like a harvested field.

Question 21

فَتَنَادَوْا مُصْبِحِينَ ‎﴿٢١﴾

Answer 21

So they called out eachother as the morning broke.

Question 22

أَنِ اغْدُوا عَلَىٰ حَرْثِكُمْ إِن كُنتُمْ صَارِمِينَ ‎﴿٢٢﴾

Answer 22

Saying: ‘Set out early upon your crop if you are going to pluck (the fruits)’.

Question 23

فَانطَلَقُوا وَهُمْ يَتَخَافَتُونَ ‎﴿٢٣﴾

Answer 23

So they set out whilst they were whispering to eachother.

Question 24

أَن لَّا يَدْخُلَنَّهَا الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكُم مِّسْكِينٌ ‎﴿٢٤﴾‏

Answer 24

Saying: ‘Let no poor man enter into it upon you today’.

Question 25

وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَادِرِينَ ‎﴿٢٥﴾

Answer 25

And in early hours they rushed quickly whilst they were (assuming themselves) powerful (to pluck the fruits and prevent the poor).

Question 26

فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهَا قَالُوا إِنَّا لَضَالُّونَ ‎﴿٢٦﴾

Answer 26

But when they saw it (the place of the ruined garden), they said: ‘We have missed the way’.

Question 27

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ ‎﴿٢٧﴾‏

Answer 27

(Then once they realised that the garden is the same but it has been destroyed they said) : No, but we are deprived (of the fruits).

Question 28

قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ أَلَمْ أَقُل لَّكُمْ لَوْلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ ‎﴿٢٨﴾‏

Answer 28

Said he who was the best amongst them: ‘Did I not say to you why do you not pronounce Allah (s.w.t)’s purity?’

Question 29

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَ رَبِّنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَالِمِينَ ‎﴿٢٩﴾

Answer 29

They said: ‘We pronounce the purity of our Lord, no doubt we were the wrongdoers’.

Question 30

فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَلَاوَمُونَ ‎﴿٣٠﴾‏

Answer 30

Then (at the beginning) they started reproaching one another.

Question 31

قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا إِنَّا كُنَّا طَاغِينَ ‎﴿٣١﴾‏

Answer 31

(And at last) they said: ‘Woe to us, in fact we all were outrageous’.

Question 32

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَا أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْرًا مِّنْهَا إِنَّا إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَاغِبُونَ ‎﴿٣٢﴾

Answer 32

‘We hope that our Lord will give us in exchange something better than this. Truly we turn to Allah (s.w.t)’

Question 33

كَذَٰلِكَ الْعَذَابُ ۖ وَلَعَذَابُ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ ۚ لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ‎﴿٣٣﴾

Answer 33

In this way the punishment comes and of course the punishment of The Hereafter is even greater if they but realise.

Question 34

إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ ‎﴿٣٤﴾‏

Answer 34

Surely for the God-fearing there are gardens of bliss.

Question 35

أَفَنَجْعَلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ كَالْمُجْرِمِينَ ‎﴿٣٥﴾‏

Answer 35

Otherwise, shall We make the obedient like the sinners?

Question 36

مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ ‎﴿٣٦﴾

Answer 36

What has happened to you? How do you judge?

Question 37

أَمْ لَكُمْ كِتَابٌ فِيهِ تَدْرُسُونَ ‎﴿٣٧﴾

Answer 37

Do you have a book in which you read?

Question 38

إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ ‎﴿٣٨﴾

Answer 38

That for you there is what you choose.

Question 39

أَمْ لَكُمْ أَيْمَانٌ عَلَيْنَا بَالِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ۙ إِنَّ لَكُمْ لَمَا تَحْكُمُونَ ‎﴿٣٩﴾

Answer 39

Or do you have oaths sworn by Us remaining effective up to The Day of Judgement. That you will get what you decide?

Question 40

سَلْهُمْ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ ‎﴿٤٠﴾

Answer 40

Ask them: ‘Which of them stands surety for that’.

Question 41

أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ فَلْيَأْتُوا بِشُرَكَائِهِمْ إِن كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ ‎﴿٤١﴾

Answer 41

Or do they have associate gods (who have guaranteed safety for them) then let them bring their associate god if they are true.

Question 42

يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَن سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ ‎﴿٤٢﴾‏

Answer 42

On The Day when the shin will be exposed and they will be called upon to prostrate themselves, they will not be able to.

Question 43

خَاشِعَةً أَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۖ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ ‎﴿٤٣﴾

Answer 43

With their eyes downcast they will be enveloped by humiliation. They used to be called upon to prostrate when they were healthy (but they did not).

Question 44

فَذَرْنِي وَمَن يُكَذِّبُ بِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ ۖ سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم مِّنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ‎﴿٤٤﴾‏

Answer 44

So leave Me alone with those who reject this discorse. We will draw them on little by little (towards Hell) from a way they do not know.

Question 45

وَأُمْلِي لَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ كَيْدِي مَتِينٌ ‎﴿٤٥﴾

Answer 45

And I give them respite. Indeed My plan is firm.

Question 46

أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُم مِّن مَّغْرَمٍ مُّثْقَلُونَ ‎﴿٤٦﴾

Answer 46

Is it that you ask them for a fee due to which they are burdened with debt.

Question 47

أَمْ عِندَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ ‎﴿٤٧﴾

Answer 47

Or do they have the knowledge of the unseen and they write it down.

Question 48

فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تَكُن كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ ‎﴿٤٨﴾

Answer 48

So remain patient with your Lord’s judgement and be not like the man of the fish. He cried out while he was in anguish.

Question 49

لَّوْلَا أَن تَدَارَكَهُ نِعْمَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ لَنُبِذَ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ مَذْمُومٌ ‎﴿٤٩﴾‏

Answer 49

Had not a favour from his Lord come to his help, he would have been cast in the wilderness in a reproachable state.

Question 50

فَاجْتَبَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَجَعَلَهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ ‎﴿٥٠﴾

Answer 50

Then his Lord chose him and made him out of the righteous.

Question 51

وَإِن يَكَادُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُولُونَ إِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُونٌ ‎﴿٥١﴾

Answer 51

And indeed the disbelievers seem to trip you up with their glances when they hear the reminder and say he is a madman indeed.

Question 52

وَمَا هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ لِّلْعَالَمِينَ ‎﴿٥٢﴾‏

Answer 52

And it is nothing else but a reminder for all the worlds.
