The Pelvis (the Pelvic Bones And Muscles) Flashcards
What is the Pelvic Cavity?
Basin-shaped space which is bound by skeletal framework, and is lined partially by peritoneum
Where is the pelvic cavity located?
Inferior to the abdominopelvic cavity
What is included in the pelvic cavity?
- Reproductive organs
- Bladder
- Rectum
How is the pelvis divided?
True and false pelvis
How is the true and false pelvis divided?
Based on an oblique plane defined by an imaginary line. Which extends from symphysis pubis (anterior) to the sacrum (posterior). Or the Pelvic brim
What does the true pelvis contain?
Birth canal for females and internal reproductive organs
Where is the true pelvis located?
Inferior to the pelvic brim, between the pelvic inlet and outlet.
What is another name for the true pelvis?
Lessor pelvis
What is another name for the false pelvis?
Greater pelvis
Where is the false pelvis located?
Superior to pelvic brim.
What structures are in the false pelvis?
- Bowel
- Bladder when full
- Uterus in pregnancy
What is the purpose of the bony structure of the pelvis?
- Supports and transmits weight of body
- Protects pelvic viscera
- Bony support for birth canal in females
- Major site of muscle attachments
- Attaches the legs to torso
What are the components of the bony components of the pelvis?
- Sacrum
- Coccyx
- Hip/ innominate bones (ilium, pubis, ischium)
What is the sacrum?
Triangular shaped bone which is fused with 5 vertebra.
Where is the sacrum located?
On the posterior
What does the S1 of the sacrum articulate with?
L5
Where is the sacral promontory located?
Anterior boarder of S1
What does the S5 of the sacrum articulates with?
Coccyx
What does the sacrum connect with?
OS coxae (Hip/innominate bone) aka the sacroiliac joints
What is a coccyx?
Structure which is located inferior to sacrum, which is a muscle attachment that also has 3-5 rudimentary vertebrae.
What is the coccyx also known as?
Tailbone
What are the parts of the hip bones?
3 parts
1. Ilium
2. Pubis
3. Ischium
What is the hip bones also called as well?
Os Coxae or innominate
What is the illium?
Largest and most superior bones in the hips. Which consists of 3 parts
1. Ala
2. Fossa
3. Crest
What is the ala?
Large, flaring portion of the ilium
What is the fossa of the ilium?
Inner aspect of ala
What is the crest of the ilium?
Most superior portion of the hip
What is the pubis?
Body and 2 rami, bodies join midline to form symphysis
What is the ischium?
Posterior and inferior part of the hip bones. Usually the part that supports us while we sit
What does the pelvic muscles do?
Assists in movement, stabilization, and protection of structure.
How are the pelvic muscles classified?
In terms of function and location
- pelvic wall
- pelvic diaphragm
What are pelvic wall muscles?
- Psoas
- Iliacus
- Iliopsoas
- Obturator
- Piriformis
What is the psoas muscle?
Lateral to vertebral bodies; extends from upper abdomen to pelvis
What is the iliacus muscles?
Triangular muscles which extends from iliac crest and sacrum to join with the psoas
What is the Iliopsoas muscle?
Muscle which is anterior over pelvic brim which inserts into femur and helps flex the thigh
What is the Obturator muscle?
Internal and external parts which forms the side walls of the pelvis, which aids in the lateral rotation of the thigh
What is the piriformis?
Triangular shaped muscle which forms a large part of the posterolateral wall of the pelvic cavity. Which is responsible for lateral rotation and abduction
What is th elevator ani muscles?
Largest and most important muscles. Integrity of the pelvic floor depends on the function of these muscles
What is the coccygeus?
Smaller than th elevator ani, which form the posterior aspect of the pelvic floor
