Reginal Anatomy Flashcards
What are body cavities?
Natural spaces within the body
What are the purpose of body cavities?
- Separate, protect and support organs
- Allow for movement and expansion of organs
**larger cavities are subdivided into smaller compartments
Where is the dorsal cavity?
Posterior and superior trunk of the body
What does the Dorsal cavity do?
1.Protects the central nervous system
2. CSF circulates in the cavities
What can the dorsal cavity be subdivided into?
Cranial and vertebral/spinal cavities
What is the cranial cavity?
Contains the brain and surrounded by the bones of the skull
What is the vertebral or spinal cavities
Contains the spinal cord/ nerves and is protected by the vertebrae
What is the ventral cavity?
Large space located in anterior aspect of the body
Is the dorsal cavity or the ventral can it’s larger?
Ventral is larger then dorsal
What are the organs in the ventral cavity called?
Viscera
What can the ventral system be subdivided into?
Thoracic and abdominopelivic cavities
Where is the thoracic cavity?
Superior portion of the ventral cavity
What is included in the thoracic cavity?
Contains the lungs and the heart. The boundaries formed by the bone sand muscles in the chest. which subdivided into two pleural cavities in the mediastinum
What is the diaphragm?
The diaphragm forms inferior boundary (floor)
What are the pleural cavities?
- Right and left cavities containing lungs. Which is lined with a membrane known as pleura
Where is the mediastinum?
Central midline cavity, which lies between pleural spaces
What is located in the mediastinum?
Contains heart, great vessels, thymus gland, trachea, esophagus, nerves and lymph nodes.
**pericardial cavity
What is the Pericardial Cavity?
Anterior component within the mediastinum which contains the heart
What is the abdominopelvic cavity?
Large cavity extending from diaphragm to pelvis. Which is lined by a serous membrane.
How is the abdominopelvic cavity subdivided?
- Abdomen (superior)
- Pelvis (inferior)
*no muscle separate between abdomen and pelvis
What is the abdominal cavity?
Upper portion of the abdominopelvic cavity. From the diaphragm to superior bony pelvis
What organs are in the abdominal cavity?
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Stomach
- Spleen and more
What is the pelvic cavity?
Lower portion of the abdominopelvic pelvic cavity which lies within the bony structure of the pelvis.
Extends from iliac crests to the pelvic floor
What are the contents of the pelvic cavity?
- Contents include bladder
- uterus
- reproductive organs etc.
Is there a way we can divide the pelvic cavity?
Yes into the true and false pelvis
What is the true pelvis?
Pelvic inlet or birth canal. Area below pelvic brim
What is the organs in the true pelvis
- Bladder
- Reproductive organs
- Rectum
What is the false pelvis
Area superior the pelvic brim and below the iliac crest
What organs are found in the false pelvis?
Mainly bowel
What are some surface landmarks we have on the body?
- Sternal notch
- Xiphoid process
- Subcostal margin
- Iliac crest
- Symphysis pubis
