Great Vessels IVC Flashcards
What do Veins do in the body?
Return blood to the heart, typically deoxygenated blood. Exception is the pulmonary veins
What is the IVC
The interior vena cava.
The largest vein in the body
IVC returns blood to which side of the heart
Right
Where is the area that the IVC formed?
L5 (just posterior to the aorta)
What is the path of the IVC
I8 10Eggs At 12
The IVC pierces the diaphragm at 8 vertebra
The esophagus pierces at the level of 10 and the aorta at level 12
Superiorly; the IVC sits _______ to the aorta
Anterior
Inferiorly, the IVC sits more ________ than the Aorta
Posterior
What are the tributaries of the IVCs
Vessels that connect directly to the IVC
- Common iliac veins
- Lumbar veins
- Right gonadal vein
- Right and left renal veins
- Right suprarenal vein
- Hepatic Veins
What Tributaries of the IVC are not really tributaries and where do they drain?
- The left gonadal drains in to the LRV
- The left suprarenal drains into the LRV
What are the Common iliac veins (CIV)
Union of external and internal iliac veins at the SI joints
How does the CIV travel?
Obliquely from lateral to medial
Where is the CIV located?
Posterior to the ureters
What are the Lumbar veins?
4 or 5 pairs the enter lateral walls of IVC and CIV
What are the Gonadal veins
A paired type of veins the ascend along the pesoas muscles that is positioned anterior to the uterus.
What are the Renal veins?
Veins that take care of the kidneys and Exit renal hilum and drain into the lateral IVC and sits anterior to the renal arteries
