Gallbladder And Biliary Tree Flashcards
What is the biliary system?
System that produces, concentrates, secretes, and transports bile from the liver to the duodenum
Where is bile formed?
In liver cells and drains through ducts
What is bile used for?
Digestion of fats in diets
Where is the location of the gallbladder located in terms of the abdomen method?
Right hypochondrium and RUQ
What is the gallbladder shaped like?
Oblong/ pear shaped sac
What is the gallbladder?
Bile reservoir
Where is the gallbladder located?
Depression on visceral surface of the liver.
It also lies lateral to the IVC and medial to right kidney
What binds GB?
Peritoneum binds Gallbladder neck and a portion of the body of the liver
What are the three parts of the gallbladder?
- Neck
- Body
- Fundus
What is the neck of the gallbladder?
Narrow superior portion, which is fixed. The MLF extends superiorly from neck to RPV
What is the body of the Gallbladder?
Middle portion between neck and fundus
What is the fundus of the gallbladder?
Inferior and anterior portion of the gallbladder, which may extend beyond the inferior margin of the RLL
Which part of the gallbladder is mobile?
Fundus
What are 3 variants of the gallbladder?
- Phrygian cap
- Hartman’s pouch
- Junctional fold
What is the Phrygian cap?
A variation of the gallbladder design with a fold between the fundus and the body
What is the duct system?
A pathway of ducts collect and transports bile
What is the duct system subdivided?
- Intrahepatic
- Extrahepatic
What is the Intrahepatic ductules?
Small bile ducts within the liver that collect bile from the liver tissue. Which get larger as they move along the biliary tree eventually forming the right and left hepatic ducts.
The Intrahepatic ductules follow what path?
Follow the course of the PV and HA branches
Can the Intrahepatic ductules be seen on ultrasound?
Rarely
What are the right and left hepatic ducts?
Drain bile from respective liver lobes, which join roughly at the level of the liver hilum.
Where does the right and left hepatic ducts join?
Common hepatic duct
How is the common hepatic duct formed?
Formed at junction of right and left hepatic ducts.
How does the common hepatic duct course and move?
Distal segment corses anterior to the RPV and MPV, and terminates at the junction of the cystic duct
What is the cystic duct?
Drains the gallbladder and contains the spiral valves of Hester.
What is the common bile duct?
Where the cystic duct merges with the CHD
Can you see the cystic duct on ultrasound?
Rarely
How does the common bile duct travel?
Inferiorly towards the head of the pancrease to join the pancreatic duct
What is the ampulla of vater?
Junction of pancreatic duct and CBD
What does the sphincter of oddi do?
Control bile flow to duodenum
How long is the common bile duct?
6-8 cms long
Where is the common bile duct located in relation to the main portal vein?
Anterior
Where is the common bile duct located in relation to the artery proper?
Lateral
Where is the common bile duct located in relation to the aspect of pancreatic head?
Posterior
