The Digestion System Flashcards
What are the four types of teeth and their use
Incisors- to cut and bite food
Canines- grip and tear food
Pre molars- crush and grind food
Molars- crush and grind food
What does the mouth do?
It takes in and digests the food, two types of digestion happen here. Physical and chemical.
What does the oesophagus do
Pushes food down to the stomach by waves of muscular action
What does the stomach do
Stores food for four to six hours. Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria in the stomach . Both physical and chemical digestion occur in the stomach.
What does the small intestine do?
The breakdown of the food finishes here. The small pieces of digested food pass into the bloodstream- absorption
What does the large intestine do?
The un-digested waste goes into the large intestine. The large intestine takes the water out of the waste and back into the body. A semi solid waste called faeses is made. It leaves the body through the anus
What does the liver do
The liver produces bile which break down fat. The bile goes into the small, intestine
What does the pancreas do?
It produces enzymes, the enzymes enter the small intestine to help digest food
Name an enzyme
Salivary Amylase
What is the substance that Salivary Amylase works on
Starch
What is the product due to the action of Salivary Amylase
Maltose
Give the five main stages of digestion
Eating Digestion Absorption Food is used by the body Undigested food is passed out of the body
Explain digestion and why we need to digest food
The breakdown of food
We need to digest food so it can be absorbed into our bloodstream in the small intestine
