Plants Flashcards
What is the function of a stem?
Support and transport materials to upper parts of plant. Some stems store food (celery, rhubarb)
What is the function of roots?
Anchor the plant and take in water/minerals. Some roots store food (carrots, potatoes)
What are the functions of leaves?
To make food for the plant and exchange gases
What is the function of a flower?
To reproduce by attracting bees and insects (spread seeds)
What is the function of a bud?
A bud is where new flowers are produced
What is the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water
With sunlight and chlorophyll
=
Glucose + oxygen
How does C02 enter the leaf?
Through stomata
How does the water enter the leaf?
Through the roots then through the stem in tubes called xylem
What is chlorophyll?
A green pigment made by plants. It absorbs the sunlight
What does a plant use glucose for?
Respiration
Store as starch
Convert to cellulose for making cell walls
What is oxygen used for in a plant?
Some used for respiration
Mostly passed out of stomata
What is chlorophyll?
A green pigment made by plants. It absorbs the sunlight
What does a plant use glucose for?
Respiration
Store as starch
Convert to cellulose for making cell walls
Explain photosynthesis
The way in which green plants make their own food
Give the word equation for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + water ➡️ sunlight. Glucose + oxygen
Chlorophyll
