Fuels and acid rain Flashcards
What is a fossil fuel?
Fuel formed from remains of plants/animals
Give four examples of fossil fuels
Coal, natural gas, oil, turf
Name the three conditions necessary for a fire to exist
Fuel, oxygen and heat
What is a fuel?
A substance which burns in oxygen to produce heat
Why is the test tube kept very cold in the experiment to test the presence of H02v and C02 when fossil fuels are burned?
To change the state of the water vapour to a liquid so it can be tested.
What are hydrocarbons?
Substances containing the elements hydrogen and carbon. Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons
What do hydrocarbons produce when burned?
Water vapour and carbon dioxide
Name the results of the experiment to test the products of the combustion of a hydrocarbon
- The anhydrous copper sulphate turns blue(H02)
- The limewater turns milky(C02)
What is the conclusion of the experiment
When a hydrocarbon is burned, carbon dioxide and water are produced
What causes acid rain?
The burning of coal and burning of petrol
How is sulphuric acid formed?
Sulphur dioxide dissolving in rainwater
How is nitric acid formed?
Oxides of nitrogen dissolving in rainwater
What does the burning of coal form?
Sulphur
What does the burning of petrol/gas form?
Oxides of nitrogen
Name three effects of acid rain
- Statues(limestone) erode
- Foliage in trees is killed
- Minerals are washed from soil into lakes where they poison fish
