The Atom Flashcards
Name the three sub-atomic particles of an atom
Protons
Neutrons
Electrons
Explain an atom
The smallest part of an element which still has the properties of that element.
What is a proton
It’s a sub-atomic particle in the atom contained in the nucleus, it has a mass of 1 and a positive charge
Explain a neutron
Is a sub-atomic particle in the atom contained in the nucleus. It has a mass of 1 and a neutral charge. The number of neutrons in a nucleus determines the isotope of that element.
What is an electron
Mass is negligible( very small ) and they have a negative charge, they orbit the nucleus
Explain the mass number
Amount of protons and neutrons together in an element
Explain atomic number
Number of protons in an element
Up to how many shells can an atom have
8
How many electrons go in each she’ll
First-2
Second,third, fourth,fifth,sixth,seventh,eighth-8
Explain isotopes
Atoms of the same element which have different numbers of neutrons.
What was the name of the scientist who was the first person to put forward the idea of electron shells containing electrons orbiting the nucleus
Niels Bohr
Name two isotopes
Carbon13
Carbon14
What are the properties of an isotope
They have the same atomic number of that element but a different mass number
