Moments, Force And Levers Flashcards
Explain Moment of a force
How much spin or circular motion of a force can cause
What is the formula for the moment of a force
Force x perpendicular distance from fulcrum to line of action of the force
Explain fulcrum
The axis or fixed point at which a lever turns
Explain a lever
A rigid body that can turn about a fixed point called a fulcrum
Give three examples of everyday applications of the lever
Scissors
Wheelbarrow
Door handle
State the law of the lever
When a lever is balanced the sum of the clockwise moments equals the sum of the anticlockwise moments
Explain the experiment to verify the law of the lever
Suspend metre stick at 50cm(centre of gravity)
Hang a 2N weight at 20cm and a 4N weight at 65cm
Metre stick will balance horizontally because moment of anti-clockwise (2N weight/right side) equals the clockwise( 4N weight/left side)
2N x 30cm = 4N x 15cm
Explain centre of gravity
A point in the object which all weight of the object appears to act
Explain what equilibrium means
When an object is balanced or still it is in equilibrium
When is something in stable equilibrium?
If object is pushed it will return to the same spot (U shape)
When is something in unstable equilibrium?
If pushed object will fall or not be in equilibrium (n shape)
When is something in neutral equilibrium?
If pushed object will not move too far and be balanced (flat)
What does stability mean
Objects will not topple easily
When will an item topple
If the weight of that object is acting through a centre of gravity
How can you improve the stability of objects
Use a wide base and lower the centre of gravity
