Energy Flashcards
What is the unit of energy
Joule
Explain energy
Energy is the ability to do work
What is the unit of force
Newton
What is the unit of distance
Metres
Name a primary source of energy
The sun
Name 8 types of energy
Chemical Electrical Magnetic Solar Light Nuclear Heat Sound
What is the formula to find work
Force multiplied by distance
When is energy converted into a different form
Whenever work is done
Explain power
The rate at which work is done.
What is kinetic energy
Moving objects have kinetic energy, example moving car or the waves
What is potential energy
Very often when you change the shape or position of an object you give the object potential energy. Like a spring or when you wind up a clock
What is sound energy
When you hear somebody talking at the far side of the room, sound energy travels from vocal chords to your ears
What is heat energy
Heat energy can cause movement.
When you heat the water in a kettle, some water evaporates into steam. You will see the steam rising upwards. The steam moves. For many years steam engines were used to move many different machines.
What is chemical energy
Chemical energy causing movement may not seem obvious at first.
The food we eat contains the chemical energy that we need to move.
What is electrical energy
Electrical energy is a good example of a form of energy causing movement.
A hair dryer not only generates heat but also has a motor that blows out the heat as hot air.
What is solar energy
Solar energy is taken straight from the rays of the sun. We convert solar energy to electrical energy using solar cells. We also convert solar energy to heat energy using solar panels.
Photosynthesis is an excellent example of solar energy causing movement. Plants grow in size, i.e. they move upwards.
What is the equation for power
Work divided by time
Name some non renewable sources of energy and what are non renewable sources of energy
Non-renewable sources of energy are sources that will run out, e.g. fossil fuels such as oil, coal, gas and turf.
Name some renewable sources of energy and what are renewable sources of energy
They will never run out. Renewable sources of energy include: solar, hydro-electricity, wind, nuclear, geothermal, biomass, tidal and wave.
Two advantages to solar energy
Solar energy is free
Solar energy does not cause pollution
Name two disadvantages to solar energy
Only a small percentage of the solar energy is converted to electrical energy
Solar cells are expensive to make
How can we conserve energy
Better insulation in homes greatly reduces the amount of heat energy lost to the outside.
Switching off electrical devices when not in use will help to reduce energy waste.
Install energy-saving bulbs in the home.
A person buying a car should consider fuel consumption. Not only can this reduce the use of energy, but it is also good for the environment.
Using public transport or travelling to school or work by bicycle helps to reduce the use of energy.
Give some examples of energy conversions
When listening to music, electrical energy is converted to sound energy.
When watching television, electrical energy is converted to light energy.
When making toast, electrical energy is converted to heat energy.
When charging our mobile phones, electrical energy is converted to chemical energy.
When using a food mixer, electrical energy is converted to kinetic
energy.
The food we eat is an example of chemical energy changing to kinetic energy when we move. This movement generates heat energy as body temperature rises when we move.
Give two advantages of fossil fuels
Can be stored
Relatively cheap
Give two disadvantages of fossil fuels
Increases greenhouse effect.
Limited supply of fuel available
