The Body: Tissues Flashcards
4 types of tissues
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Functions of epithelial cells
Specialised secretion
Provide sensation
Control permeability
Physical protection
What does epithelial do?
Covers every surface in the body + lines all parts that come into contact with outside world
List special features of epithelial cells,
Avascular
High rate of regeneration
Attached to basement membrane
Connected to each o ther/other cells
Polarity ( distinct basal/ apical membranes)
Types of epithelial cells
Simple and stratified:
Squamous
Cuboidal
Columnar
Tissue important for support, protection, transport + storing energy reserves
Connective tissue
Type of connective tissue for blood + lymph
Fluid connective tissue
Type of connective tissue for loose or dense e.g. Fat + tendons
Connective tissue proper
Type of connective tissue for cartilage + bone
Supporting connective tissue
Function of connective tissue list
Defence
Transport funds + dissolved materials
Storage of energy reserves
Support, surround + connect other types of tissues
Protect delicate organs
Structural framework
Specialised cells in connective tissue
Adipocytes
Mast cells
WBC
What membrane found in digestive, urinary, respiratory and reproductive systems
Mucous
Why must a mucous membrane be moist?
To reduce friction and facilitate absorption and secretion
Serous membrane that encases the heart?
Pericardial
Serous membrane that encases the lung?
Pleural
Serous membrane that encases? Everything but heart and lungs
Peritoneal
Types of muscles
Cardiac, skeletal, smooth
Function of muscles
Respond to chemical, mechanical and electrical stimuli
Generate heat
Produce movement (Voluntary and involuntary )
Types of nerves?
Motor, integration, sensory, relay
Functions of neurones
Respond to chemical, mechanical + electrical stimuli
What tissues form GI tract?
Epithelial, connective, music, nervous
Role of epithelial tissue in GI tract?
Lines the stomach, absorb nutrient, secretes stomach acid to break down food, protective barrier
Role of connective tissue in GI tract?
Provides overall structure of stomach and connects epithelial tissue to muscle tissue
Role of muscle tissue in GI tract?
Contraction
Role of nervous tissue in GI tract?
Detect and send signals
