the biliary system - lecture video Flashcards
what is the biliary system used for?
a way to allow liver to get bile it produces from hepatocytes into the GI tract - 2nd part of duodenum
what does the biliary system contain?
ducts, gallbladder
where does the bile produced in bile-dependent pathway drain into?
from hepatocytes into bile cannuliculi
increase in size of biliary ducts, until R & left side of liver –> main ducts (R & L hepatic ducts) - drain functional liver –> common hepatic duct
where is bile stored? when? why?
bile produced continuously
not needed between meals
stored in gallbladder - dehydrated
what connects the gallbladder to common bile duct?
cystic duct
what is the sphincter of oddi?
at major duodenal papillae
determines what enters 2nd section of duodenum
what happens during meal times?
bile is discharged from gallbladder to 2nd part of duodenum - through gallbladder contraction
(Common hepatic duct, common bile duct –> major duodenal papillae)
