Surface anatomy of anterolateral abdominal wall Flashcards
what is the umbilicus?
most visible structure of the abdominal wall
is the scar of the site of attachment of the umbilical cord
where is the umbilicus found?
midway between the xiphoid process and the pubis symphysis
what gives rise to the abdominal markings?
rectus abdominus
what is the lateral border of rectus abdominus indicated by?
linea semilunaris
a curved line running from the 9th rib to the pubic tubercle
what is the linea alba?
a fibrous line that splits the rectus abdominus into 2
what is the linea alba visible as?
a vertical groove extending inferiorly from the xiphoid process
how many regions is the abdomen split into?
9 regions
how is splitting the abdomen into 9 regions useful?
clinically for describing pain
location of viscera
describing surgical procedure
what are the 9 regions formed by?
2 horizontal planes and 2 vertical planes
what are the 2 horizontal planes of the anterolateral abdominal wall?
transpyloric and intertubercular plane
what is the transpyloric plane?
horizontal line halfway between the xiphoid process and the umbilicus, passing through the pylorus of the stomach
what is the intertubercular plane?
horizontal line that joins the iliac crest
what are the 2 vertical lines called?
mid-clavicular lines
where do the mid-clavicular lines run?
from middle of clavicle to mid-inguinal point (1/2 way between ASIS of pelvis and pubic symphysis)
what are the most superior 3 regions?
right hypochondrium, epigastric (centre), left hypochondrium
