Test 4 Chapter 13,15 and 15 Flashcards
What is matter
Matter is anything that occupies space
What are the 3 states of matter
1 solid: it has a definite shape and volume and is difficult to compress
2 liquid: has a definite volume and difficult to compress and no definite shape
3Gas: no definite volume or shape and easy to compress
What is Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from one area with high concentration to an area with low concentration eg perfume spreads around a room
What is a physical change
Changes of state that are easy to reverse and gain or loss energy eg chocolate melting
What is a chemical change
When it takes place it forms a new substance that is hard to reverse and energy is released eg burning wood
What is a solute
It is the substance that dissolves in a solvent eg salt
What is a solvent
A substance in which a solute dissolves in eg water
What is a solution
A mixture and the result of a solvent and solute mixed together
What does a diluted and concentrated solution have more or less of
A dilute solution contains less solute and a concentrated solution contains more solute
Difference between insoluble and soluble
A solid that will not dissolve in a solvent is said to me insoluble eg chalk in water. A solid that will dissolve in a solvent is said to be soluble eg salt dissolves in water
