Solar System Flashcards
Define the term Astroid
Small rock body orbiting the Sun the largest is the ceres
Define the term moon
Natural satellite of the Earth visible by reflection from the Sun
Define the term satellite
Artificial body placed in orbit around the Earth or moon in order to collect information and communicate
Where would asteroids be located?
Astroid belt between Mars and Jupiter
Define the term comet
Celestial object consisting of a nucleus of ice dust and when near the sun, a tail of gas and dust particles pointing away from the Sun
What is the most famous comet
Halley comet
What happens when a comet gets too close to the Sun?
It hits up and spewed dust and gases into a joint growing head larger than most plants
Define the term solar system
The solar system consists of the star and planets which orbit it
Define the term orbit
Orbit means the pathway a planet takes around the Sun
Define the term planet
The word planet means a large body which orbits a star
List 3 characteristics of planets
Relevantly large
Significant gravity
Have some sort of atmosphere
Define the term dwarf planet
Resembles a small planet but lacking certain planet classifications
What is the moon
The moon is a satellite of the earth. It’s revolves around the earth every 28 days. At the same time the moon is rotating on its own axis. As both the rotating and revolving of the moon occur at the same time we only see one side of the moon. The moon is non luminous and had no atmosphere as the moons gravity is 1/6 of the earths. The Mons gravity pulls on the sea levels on earth causing high tide on the side closest to the moon
Name 3 other moons
Titan
Phobos
Eupopa
List the 8 stages of the moon
New moon
Waxing crescent
Fist quarter moon
Waxing gibbous
Full moon
Waning gibbous
Third quarter
Waning crescent
Tell me about the new moon
Near side of the moon in the shadow
Tell me about waxing crescent
Increasing section of the new side of the moon reflecting light from the sun as the moons gravity is rotates
Tell me about thr first quarter moon
One half of the nearer side of the moon is reflecting light from the sun
Tell me about waxing gibbous
Most of near side of the moon is reflecting sunlight
Tell me about the full moon
All of the near side of the moon is reflecting sunlight
Tell me about waning gibbous
Less of the moon visible as light does not reflect all of the moons near side surface
Tell me about the third quarter moon
Half of the near side is reflecting light from thr
Tell me about the waning crescent
Small section of the near side of the moon reflecting light, just before a new moon
Explain the way seasons work
These are changes in our weather due to the arch’s rotation on a tilted axis of 25.5 degrees. I see earth revolves around the Sun every 364 1/4 days the part of the Earth tilted towards the Sun experience the summer and the part tilted away from the Sun experience winter.
Why do warm and cold temperatures occur
Warm temperatures occurred during summer as the Sun’s light is shining directly on a smaller area. Colder temperatures occur during winter as the sun is lower in the sky so sunlight covers a wider area.
What is a short term period comet
This means that it orbits the Sun in 200 years or less
What are Terrestrial planet
Terrestrial planets (Earth sized and smaller) are rocky worlds, composed of rock, silicate, water and/or carbon
What are Jovian plants
These are gas giants. They are larger planets and are further from the Sun. They also rotate faster.
Name a scientific model that you have studied
The big bang
Outline two pieces of evidence that supports The Big Bang theory
The evidence of Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation informs us of the Big Bang having taken place from a singularity. Hubble’s Law explains that the universe is expanding following on from the Big Bang.
