Test 3 chapter 6+7 Flashcards
What is plasma
It is the liquid part of the blood and is yellow in colour it is made up of mostly water and helps carry heat around the body
What do white blood cells do
They fight infection and digest bacteria
What are red blood cells
Red blood cells contain haemoglobin to carry oxygen. It is a red substance containing iron
What are platelets
They help with blood clotting
Describe the arteries
They have a thick wall. They carry blood away from the heart under high pressure
Describe capillaries
They have a tiny thin wall. They allow materials in and out of the blood
Describe veins
They have a thin wall. They carry blood to the heart and the blood is under low pressure so veins have valves to stop back flow
Nose
We inhale through are nose. It warms and moistens the air and hair traps dust and bacteria
Trachea
Carries air to and from the bronchus
Bronchus
Carries air into and from the lungs
Bronchiole
Branch of branches that carries air to and from the alveoli
Alveolus
Tiny air sac in the lungs. There are millions in each lung. They are the site of Gas exchange where CO2 diffuses into blood
What is the diaphragm
The diaphragm muscle and the muscle between the ribs cause air to flow in and out of the lungs
Name the 4 things in our blood
Plasma
• Red blood cells
• White blood cells
• Platelets.
Define the term chambers
The heart contains four chambers. The top two are the right atrium and the left atrium (plural atria) and the bottom two are the right and left ventricles.
Define the term septum
The two sides of the heart are separated by a muscular wall called the septum.
Define the term heart valves
Valves in the heart make sure that blood can flow only in one direction. In this way, they are similar to valves in a car tyre or football (which let air pass in, but not out).
What is a pulse
When blood is pumped through the arteries, the pressure causes the arteries to expand.
Define the term excretion
Excretion is the getting rid of the waste products of reactions from the body.
Name the 6 functions that make up the breathing system
Nose
Trachea
Bronchi and bronchioles
Alveoli
Diaphragm
Ribs and intercostal muscles.
Describe what happens in the respiration system when a person breaths in?
When a person breathes into their nose, the diaphragm contracts move down lungs expand and the trachea carries air into the lungs. The bronchioles carry air to the alveoli where oxygen passes from the alveoli into the bloodstream.
